Who We Are

Centro de Información is a place where our Latino community has felt safe, understood, and supported for more than 40 years. We are a not-for-profit social services agency that provides bilingual advocacy at our locations in Elgin, Carpentersville, and Hanover Park for more than 15,000 immigrants every year. Centro serves mostly low-income, Hispanic immigrants residing in the greater Fox Valley area, but we welcome clients of any nationalityfrom surrounding counties and states.

WHAT WE DO

Immigrant families come with limited English, little knowledge of American culture, and no clear idea of local expectations or laws. This can lead to their being vulnerable to problems like abuse, neglect, domestic violence, hunger, unemployment, unmet medical needs, and more. Our agency is here to help with those problems. We provide immigration and naturalization services, employment aid, parenting skills classes, an emergency food pantry, educational seminars, and additional services to the Kane County area.

Centro is proud of its community and works hard to support and strengthen a growing and vibrant suburban Latino presence.

OUR HISTORY

Founded in 1972, Centro de Información began in borrowed space and was only open once a week in an effort to provide information, advocacy, and referrals for the 5,000 Hispanics in the Elgin Area at the time. It was initially launched as an outreach mission of the United Methodist Church and the Catholic Archdiocese of Rockford, but has since become a standalone 501(c)(3) that is no longer affiliated with any religious organization.

More than 45 years since our beginning, Centro continues to be a pillar of our community, providing invaluable services to thousands of clients from many nationalities every year. Our services and office space have expanded over the years, as has the Hispanic community in the Elgin Area, now making up more than 40 percent of our local population. We are pleased to lend a helping hand to our neighbors, and are grateful to our supporters and partners who make it possible.
